Celebrating September as Sickle Cell Awareness Month in Ireland

Information activities to encourage SCD awareness within the community commenced through the month of September in various locations.

The aim of these activities was to:

  1. Encourage the community to avail of genetic testing for SCD and Thalassaemia,
  2. Involve other immigrant communities and target groups to join in the efforts to raise awareness,
  3. Encourage community support for families and people living with SCD and Thalassaemia in Ireland.

Outcome

  1. 2800 Information leaflets handed out to the public in various locations i.e. super markets, schools, streets
  2. Leaflets given in to GP surgeries, Health centres
  3. Asian population in Ireland joined in the activities to raise awareness of SCD and Thalassaemia.
  4. Invited to radio programmes to raise Sickle Cell awareness on Stations i.e. 103 News talk FM, 93.9 Dublin South FM.
